5 Facts About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese technique. When carried out as a treatment, fine needles are inserted into the body at certain points, known as acupoints. With these, a practitioner is able to help treat many physical and mental illnesses. Here at Buddha Beauty, we’ve put together our top 5 facts you should know about acupuncture…

Experts suspect that there are roughly 1000 to 2000 acupoints within and throughout the body, with 8-18 identified for acupuncture treatment.

Being able to carry out the art of acupuncture requires a complete understanding of the human body. In fact, many believe that only doctors should be able to practice it as it requires detailed knowledge in order to correctly identify the acupoints. With this in mind, being a doctor is not required, and in order to successful carry out acupuncture, you can be sure any practitioner is experienced and educated.

It takes around three and a half years, or 38 months, to qualify as an acupuncturist.

Acupuncture is very effective as a pain reliever, so much so that it can be used as an anaesthetic. This is very beneficial as the side effects usually found with normal painkillers, such as addiction, do not occur.

Contrary to belief, the insertion of the acupuncture needles is, usually, not very painful! Most people do not even feel the needles enter the body. This is because acupuncture needles are solid, not hollow and are much thinner – imagine the diameter of a thick human hair. Patients may encounter sensations such as tingling however, this is simply energy moving or channels which were blocked opening. It is important to remember that every experience with acupuncture will differ from person to person.
